The Effects of L-carnitine in Congestive Cardiomyopathy

Abstract

|
We evaluated the effects of L-carnitine on left ventricular systolic time intervals, plasma lipid, blood pressure and heart rate in 22 patients with congestive cardiomyopathy.
In addition to tradional therapy(digoxin and diuretics) given in all cases, 22 patients received oral L-carnitine in 1 gram dose three times daily for 4 weeks. Time intevals of left ventricular systole were studied by M-mode echocardiography.
After L-carnitine therapy for 4 weeks, the ration of pre-ejection period to left venticular ejection time (PEP/LVET) was significantly decreased(0.62±0.130 VS 0.53±0.078).
But blood pressure, heart rate, and plasma lipid were not significantly changed after L-carnitine therapy, decreased PEP/LVET suggest that L-carnitine may be of use to improve the myocardial function of congestive cardiomyopathy.
